Partaking In A Worthy Manner
“Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner…” are intense words of caution to the Corinthian Christians and us today when we partake of the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:27). What does “in an unworthy manner” mean?
It’s Not Perfect Living
The “unworthy manner” is not how we lived last week, either faithfully or unfaithfully, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Most people don’t have sinless weeks! Both the strong and struggling Christian needs to eat the Lord’s Supper. As you remember His sufferings and sacrifice for your sins, your faith can be strengthened and reminded of God’s gift of His Son for the forgiveness of your sins. The warning is concerning our thoughts and what we meditate on during the Supper.
It’s Not Ordinary Meal
The Corinth church had reduced the Lord’s Supper to a Sunday brunch! “Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. For in eating, each one takes his own supper...What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in?” (11:20-22) By not meditating upon the death of Jesus, His body and blood, they were eating the Lord’s Supper “in an unworthy manner”.
It’s Remembering Jesus’ Death
“Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me...” (11:24-25) God wants us to think about the “body” and “blood” of Jesus as we eat the Supper. “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes” (11:26). Will you remember His sacrifice for your eternal salvation this coming Sunday?
